Two weeks before kickoff, the uncertainty is over—and the shock is real.

USL League One officially announced that South Georgia Tormenta FC will not field a team for the 2026 season, confirming rumors first reported by Alex Ashton of @leagueoneupdater who was a guest on Fort Wayne Footy just a day earlier.

What began as whispers is now a major storyline for the league—and a cautionary tale for clubs across lower-division soccer.

From Rumor to Reality

On the podcast, Ashton described how the story first surfaced.

“About a week ago, I got tipped off that the team had not started preseason training… which is odd when every other team is posting photos,” he said.

Soon after, sources confirmed financial trouble tied to an unpaid insurance bill.

“By about noon, we had confirmed that it sounded like they were not fielding a team in 2026.”

Less than 24 hours later, the league made it official.

Tormenta, one of League One’s original clubs, is out—for now.

A League Growing… and Shrinking

The league had planned to jump to 21 teams in 2026, but the number keeps falling. Sporting Cascades FC, Fort Lauderdale United FC, and Texoma FC had already withdrawn.

Now Tormenta joins the list.
